CVD vs HPHT Lab Diamonds: What Is the Difference?

13 May 2026 · 8 min read

Every diamond begins as a seed, much like the first spark of an ambition or the quiet beginning of a lifelong dream. For the modern woman, a diamond is not just a stone; it is a physical marker of a moment where she decided to grow, to push through pressure, and to emerge more brilliant than before.

Choosing a lab grown diamond is a conscious step toward a future where luxury is kind to the earth and true to your values. It is an act of self-love that honors both where you come from and where you are going.

However, as you curate your personal collection, selecting pieces that reflect your unique journey, you might encounter technical terms like CVD and HPHT. While these names may sound clinical at first, they represent the two distinct, beautiful paths a diamond takes to reach its final, radiant form.

Understanding the journey of your diamond, how it was nurtured and brought to life, adds a layer of intimacy to the piece you wear. It is about knowing the origin of your brilliance and ensuring it aligns perfectly with the intentional, authentic life you lead every day.

The Miracle of Growth: What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Before we dive into the technicalities of CVD and HPHT diamonds, it is essential to ground ourselves in what these stones actually are. A lab grown diamond is a diamond in every sense, chemically, physically, and optically identical to those mined from the earth.

The only difference is the point of origin. Instead of being forged deep underground over billions of years, these diamonds are created in controlled environments that replicate the Earth’s natural conditions.

For our brand, this process is the ultimate expression of our philosophy. We believe in growth that is purposeful. By choosing HPHT lab grown diamonds or CVD diamonds, you are choosing a conflict free path that respects the planet while offering the same everlasting fire and durability that diamonds are celebrated for.

HPHT: The Power of Pressure

The first method developed to create diamonds is HPHT, which stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This process is a direct mimicry of how diamonds form in the depths of the Earth’s mantle.

In an HPHT chamber, a small diamond seed is placed into carbon. The machine then subjects this carbon to intense pressure (over 1.5 million pounds per square inch) and extreme heat (above 1,500 degrees Celsius). Under these conditions, the carbon melts and begins to form a diamond structure around the seed.

When you look at an HPHT CVD comparison, HPHT is often noted for its ability to produce diamonds with exceptional color. Many of the stones found in our Timeless collection here at Keemti start their journey this way.

Because the process involves such heavy machinery and energy to maintain pressure, it is a testament to the idea of "growing under pressure", a sentiment many ambitious individuals resonate with.

CVD: The Art of Precision

The second method, and perhaps the more modern evolution in diamond creation, is CVD, or Chemical Vapor Deposition. If HPHT is about raw power, CVD diamond growth is about delicate precision.

In the CVD process, a thin slice of a diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, such as methane. Using technology like microwaves or lasers, the gas is ionized, breaking down the molecular bonds.

The pure carbon then begins to rain down onto the diamond seed, layering atom by atom, much like how snowflakes collect on a windowsill or how you build your career, with one deliberate step each time.

This method allows for incredible control over the diamond’s purity. We find that CVD diamonds often result in the stunning clarity required for our Workwear collection, pieces that need to be minimal yet magnetic, catching the light during a presentation or a high-stakes meeting.

CVD vs HPHT Lab Diamonds: Is One "Better"?

When choosing between a CVD HPHT diamond, it is important to realize that once the diamond is grown, cut, and polished, even a trained gemologist cannot tell the difference with the naked eye.

Both are real diamonds. Both carry the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale). Both possess the same refractive index that creates that signature sparkle.

However, there are subtle nuances in their growth history:

  • Growth Morphology: HPHT diamonds typically grow in a cuboctahedron shape (14 directions of growth), while CVD diamonds grow in a flat, tabular shape (one direction). This only matters to the master cutter who decides how to shape the stone to maximize its fire.

  • Color and Purity: Historically, HPHT was used to create smaller diamonds or to enhance the color of existing ones. CVD is often preferred for larger, high-clarity stones.

  • Inclusions: All diamonds have "birthmarks." In HPHT diamonds, you might find tiny metallic inclusions from the flux used in the growth process. In CVD diamonds, inclusions are typically non diamond carbon spots.

Rather than focusing on the method, what truly matters is the quality of the diamond itself. Some of the most remarkable diamonds in history, including the Koh-i-noor, belong to what is known as Type IIa, a rare category known for exceptional purity and light performance due to the absence of measurable impurities.

At Keemti, we prioritise diamonds that reflect this same standard of clarity and brilliance. Our stones are carefully selected for their Type IIa like properties, ensuring a level of transparency and radiance that feels refined, enduring, and deeply personal.

Marking Your Milestones with Keemti

Our collections are designed with these scientific marvels at their heart, ensuring that the diamond you wear is as multi faceted as your life.

Stacks of Success

Your journey isn't a single event; it's a series of breakthroughs. Our Stacks of Success collection utilizes both HPHT lab grown diamonds and CVD stones to create versatile rings and bands. When you stack these pieces, you aren't just wearing jewellery; you are wearing a timeline of your triumphs. The choice of a lab grown stone here signifies a modern legacy, one that values progress without compromise.

The 9-to-5 Collection

The Workwear collection offers elegance that works as hard as you do. Using high-clarity CVD diamond accents, these pieces provide a charm that doesn't need to shout to be heard. They are designed to be light and comfortable for all day wear but possess enough magnetic brilliance to remind you of your power every time you catch your reflection.

Forever Classics

Some things are meant to transcend the moment. Our Timeless collection features larger solitaire stones, often grown through the HPHT process to achieve that perfect, icy white D-E-F color grade. These are the pieces you buy to celebrate the versions of yourself you have yet to meet, the eternal elegance that remains constant even as you evolve.

Why the Origin Matters to You

You might wonder why we share the science of CVD and HPHT diamonds so transparently. It is because modern consumers value authenticity. You want to know that the luxury you indulge in isn't costing the earth.

By understanding that your diamond was grown in a lab using either the power of pressure (HPHT) or the precision of chemistry (CVD), you can be confident that your jewellery is:

  • Ethically Crafted: Every diamond is conflict-free and planet-conscious.

  • Consciously Priced: You are paying for the beauty of the stone and the skill of the craftsman, not the inflated costs of a traditional supply chain.

  • Transparently Sourced: Knowing the "how" behind the "wow" allows for a deeper connection to your accessories.

A Reflection of Your Journey

In the end, the technical distinction between CVD and HPHT diamonds is a small part of a much larger, more beautiful narrative. Whether a diamond was formed through intense heat and pressure or layered atom by atom in a chamber, it underwent a transformation to become something precious.

This mirrors your own path. You have your own roots and upbringing, but you are not limited by them. You grow with purpose, sometimes through the high-pressure moments of a career shift and sometimes through the steady, intentional layering of skills and experiences.

When you choose a piece from Keemti whether it’s a shimmering CVD diamond necklace or a pair of HPHT lab grown diamond studs, you are choosing to celebrate that growth. You are acknowledging that you are timeless, brilliant, and rare.

Your path is your own, and every milestone, no matter how small it may seem to others, deserves to be marked with a light that never fades. As you shine in your own light, carrying your history and your future on your skin, the world truly does glow a little brighter.

That is our promise: to provide the brilliance that matches the spark already inside you.
