Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat are the globally recognised standards used to evaluate diamond quality. Together, they help explain why two diamonds that appear similar at first glance can look and perform very differently once you take a closer look.

Cut: The Detail That Shapes Brilliance 

Within the four characteristics, cut is the one that most directly controls how a diamond looks to the naked eye. It is also the most misunderstood, because cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond (round, oval, pear). 

Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the diamond's facets: the precise angles at which each tiny surface has been shaped so that light enters, bounces internally, and exits in a way that creates brilliance.

A diamond that is cut too shallow allows light to leak out through the bottom. One that is cut too deep traps light inside. An excellent or ideal cut finds the exact geometry where light travels back to your eye as fire and sparkle.

Cut grades typically run:

  • Excellent / Ideal: Maximum brilliance, the preferred choice for solitaires and statement pieces

  • Very Good: Captures most of the light; a solid, accessible grade

  • Good: Noticeably less sparkle; usually chosen to prioritise size within a budget

  • Fair / Poor: Light loss is visible; generally not recommended for jewellery

An insider point worth knowing: In lab grown diamonds, excellent cut grades are more accessible than they are in mined diamonds because the growth process gives manufacturers more control over the rough material they start with. This means you can prioritise cuts without it automatically pushing your budget up.


Colour: Understanding What the Eye Actually Sees 

Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. D is completely colourless. As you move toward Z, the diamond carries increasing amounts of yellow or brown tint, caused by trace nitrogen absorbed during growth.

Here is how the scale is grouped:

  • D, E, F: Colourless. The most sought-after range; the diamond appears clear and bright against any metal.

  • G, H, I, J: Near colourless. To the unaided eye, these look white, and they represent excellent lab grown diamonds quality at a more approachable price.

  • K to M: Faint yellow. Visible tint that becomes more noticeable in larger carat weights.

  • N to Z: Light to very light yellow. Colour is distinctly visible.

For everyday jewellery, a G or H colour grade is a particularly smart choice. The tint is imperceptible without magnification, and the diamond still photographs and catches light with the same freshness as a D. 

Clarity: The Details Hidden Within the Diamond 

Every diamond, regardless of origin, forms under conditions that can leave behind tiny internal characteristics called inclusions or surface marks called blemishes. Clarity grading measures how many of these exist, how large they are, and where they sit within the diamond.

The clarity scale runs as follows:

  • FL (Flawless) and IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Exceptionally rare.

  • VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions are extremely difficult to detect even for a trained grader under magnification.

  • VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Inclusions are minor and difficult to see under 10x magnification.

  • SI1 and SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions are noticeable under magnification but usually not visible to the naked eye.

  • I1, I2, I3 (Included): Inclusions are visible without magnification and may affect brilliance.

For most jewellery purposes, a VS1 to SI1 range is considered the sweet spot for quality of lab grown diamonds. The diamond is eye clean, meaning you will not see any inclusions when wearing it, and the price difference compared to a flawless grade is significant.

The lab grown difference here: In CVD grown lab diamonds, graders sometimes note a particular type of inclusion called graining or cloud formation. This is not a defect. It is simply how the solitaire grew. 

An SGL certificate will document any such characteristics clearly, which is part of why third-party certification matters at Keemti. You are not relying on our word. You are reading an independent technical report.

Carat: Understanding Presence, Scale, and Proportion 

Carat is the measure of a diamond's weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams, or one-fifth of a gram. The carat scale is divided into 100 points, so a 0.75 carat diamond is also described as a 75 pointer.

Here is what most buyers do not immediately know: carat weight and visible size are related but not the same thing. Because different diamond shapes spread their weight differently, a 1 carat oval diamond will look visibly larger than a 1 carat round brilliant of the same weight. The oval carries more surface area on top.

This is worth knowing when you are comparing the 4Cs of lab grown diamonds across different diamond shapes and jewellery designs. A pear, oval, or marquise-shaped lab grown diamond will always appear larger face-up than a round of identical carat weight, because of how the weight is distributed.

Carat and the other Cs together: A 1.5 carat diamond with a poor cut and low colour will often look less impressive than a 0.8 carat diamond with an excellent cut and G colour. Carat weight creates presence; the other three Cs determine the quality of that presence. This is a distinction worth making before you set a number in your mind and shop backward from it.

How SGL Certification Connects All Four Cs

This matters because lab grown diamond grading is the same rigorous process as for mined diamonds. The origin is different. The standard is not.

Putting the 4Cs to Work When You Shop

Understanding the four characteristics in isolation is useful. Knowing how to balance them is more so. Here are a few practical principles:

  • Prioritise cut above all else. A beautifully cut lab grown diamond in a lower colour or clarity grade will outshine a poorly cut one in a higher grade.

  • For white metal settings (platinum, white gold), stay at H colour or above. The metal amplifies any warmth in the diamond, making colour more visible.

  • For yellow or rose gold settings, I or J colour works perfectly. The warm metal tones balance the slight warmth in the diamond.

  • For everyday pieces like earrings or a delicate ring, VS2 to SI1 clarity is entirely adequate. The inclusions are invisible at wearing distance.

  • For a solitaire ring that will be the centrepiece of a look, prioritise VS1 and above. Here, the diamond is the design, and clarity supports that.
